Spotlighting individuals making innovative use of media to foster participatory democracy and community is the goal of the Media Giraffe Project, hosted by the journalism faculty at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and funded by private donations.
Begun in March, the three-year research effort seeks, identifies and profiles individuals "sticking their necks out" using media to achieve more citizen involvement and accountability in government and public policy.
Project researchers chronicle what's working at the local and national level via a website, "how-to" video, a book and training.
The project is launched with the collaboration of The Giraffe Hero Project.
