About

UPDATE:
On Sept. 10, 2006, Sussman announced the start of a blog on the Nieman Watchdog site, authored on a rotating basis by 11 prominent writers.

Below excerpted from http://niemanwatchdog.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=about.viewStaff&bioid=4:

Barry Sussman is the editor of the Nieman Watchdog Project. Along with Bob Giles, the Nieman curator, and Murrey Marder, sponsor of the Watchdog Project, he determined the goals and features for this Web site.
. . .
In recent years Sussman has worked as an international news media consultant with assignments at newspapers in Spain, Portugal and in seven Latin American countries. Since 1999 he has been co-editor of "Innovations in Newspapers," an annual report on the news media, worldwide, done for the World Association of Newspapers.

Below information on Nieman Watchdog excerpted from http://niemanwatchdog.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=about.Mission_Statement:

Great questions are a key to great journalism. But often, in the press of deadlines, the flood of raw information, manipulated news, deliberate misinformation and just plain junk, great questions are hard to develop. Reporters and editors need to know what''s happening, why it happened, who''s involved, who''s affected and what happens next.

The premise of watchdog journalism is that the press is a surrogate for the public, asking probing, penetrating questions at every level, from the town council to the state house to the White House, as well as in corporate and professional offices, in union halls, on university campuses and in religious organizations that seek to influence governmental actions.
